The next program cohort will run for 3 months from January 2023 - March 2023. This program has a prerequisite: First Things First sleep self-assessment and tutorial (free).

Overview

The Mastering Restful Sleep program is for women who wish to reset and restore their sleep patterns in order to regain energy and freedom from stress about sleep. It is designed with women in mind and is aimed at providing personalized guidance for chronic restless sleep.

The program was formed for the purpose of bringing together women who have chronic sleep problems, who value intentional living, and who wish to use sleep physiology and well-tested behavioral principles to guide sleep decisions. While we practice accountability and using our "grit," we also practice self-compassion towards ourselves and others as we move through the process of transforming sleep patterns.

This program is for you if:

  • You've followed the sleep hygiene recommendations and they don't improve the situation fully. In fact, you have tried everything you can think of to sleep better.
  • You have sleep problems that are quite chronic in nature, perhaps from years to decades.
  • Despite having fewer life stressors than when the sleep problems first started, sleep remains an unsatisfying and frustrating aspect of your life.
  • You have cobbled together habits and meds that are sort of working, but you have mixed feelings about relying on medication to sleep over the long term.
  • You love learning, and you aren't into the idea of a phone app telling you how to address your sleep problems.
  • You are energized by practicing kindness and compassion.
  • You are ready to invest the next few months in improving your sleep.

Additionally, this program is especially for you if:

  • You tend to run a little on the anxious and worried side (we integrate mindfulness and calming approaches into the program).
  • You feel ready to be more energized to enjoy life and all it has to give.
  • You want to be able to trust your body's ability to sleep well.
  • You want more freedom from worrying about sleep, such as when you travel across time zones or have something fun or important the next day.
  • You want to know that your body is getting what it needs for sleep, so that it receives all of the benefits of restorative sleep to support good physical and mental health, now and in the future.
  • You have time to meet online on some Wednesday's from 11am-Noon EST.

This program is NOT A FIT for you if:

  • Your life is very full at the moment, and meeting twice per month for a few months is going to be hard to do, or you'll feel resentful of having that time commitment.
  • You don't believe in using science and behavioral principles in order to improve sleep.
  • You have given up on sleeping better or you believe that you have found all of the answers to your sleep questions already.
  • You only want a quick fix to knock you out without understanding the underlying process of good sleep
  • You intensely fear change, as it feels too scary to shake up any part of your current sleep routine.
  • Nightmares or trauma keep you awake at night, you are actively experiencing acute mental health problems which would interfere with your learning and implementation of new skills, or you are awakened by breathlessness or panicky sensations (see our free tutorial course, First Things First).
  • You are a college student or young adult; with that said, we will make exceptions for women who are younger than 40 with chronic health issues (email us: [email protected]).

The details

Sleep problems don't develop overnight. The body gets conditioned over a series of repetitions. These repetitions lead the body to be trained into its current sleep pattern. While there is not a magic overnight fix for this, our program is designed to give you the tools needed and the nuanced bits of information for your particular sleep needs, so that you can re-condition and re-train your body for better sleep.

The framework for the course:

  • 5 stages of short, easily-digestible, online lessons accessible 24-7.
  • Between lessons, you will be applying what you learned to your body and collecting data. At the end of the Sleep Q&A sessions (6 total), people tend to have some finishing touches and repetition to practice yet, but have experienced a resetting of sleep, are over the "hump" of the hardest changes, and are confident in what they need to do at that point.

As a bonus and to assist with the "finishing touches" of the sleep formula, there will be 2 extra Sleep Q&A sessions after the last session, at no additional cost.

Tools that are taught are based upon the physiology of sleep and behavioral principles of our bodies, and we'll dig into the nitty-gritty of your sleep so that you can land on a formula tailored to your individual sleep needs and unique challenges, regardless of whether your sleep has been unsatisfying for weeks, months or years.

The Mastering Restful Sleep Program includes a step-by-step process. It includes guidance and accountability for:

  • Setting up your body to have a stronger drive into deeper, more restorative sleep
  • Effective use of a "diligent grit" mindset instead of a sabotaging mindset
  • Shutting off your mind so you can sleep
  • Changing what keeps your sleep problems coming back in your life
  • Identification of your body's personal sleep formula and needs

What makes this program unique?

  • We believe that the most effective version of sleep improvement occurs when a person is allowed the freedom to learn at their own pace, while having a trusted place to ask questions as they arise. This is what we do. Most programs are more of a one-size-fits-all approach, and the ability to ask your unique questions and hear from directly from people about what works can be the difference between a positive outcome and a mediocre one.
  • The group Sleep Q&A sessions are by far one of the most often-cited aspects of our program which people appreciate in hindsight. The experience of being awake when the rest of the household is sleeping can be lonely. Having a small cohort of people who can foster being smartly curious about sleep and who provide positive motivation (rather than catastrophic thinking or judgment) is invaluable.
  • While we are not a full substitute for insomnia treatment or other medical conditions, this program certainly overlaps with insomnia treatment principles from CBT-I (cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia). Members need not have a formal diagnosis of insomnia to participate or to benefit. Lessons are rooted in empirical knowledge and current thinking around best practices for sleep.
  • If you are a woman who has suffered sleep problems for years, such as since your children were born or since you had a major life transition (such as a loss or health change), you will be in great company! Your sleep problems will be extremely well-understood and supported throughout the program.

What is included in the Mastering Restful Sleep Program?

  • Short written lessons of easily-understood instructions about how to understand your sleep patterns and make step-by-step changes toward resetting and restoring your ability to have restful, predictable sleep
  • Small group Q&A sessions every other week to keep you on top of your sleep changes and get your questions answered by an expert, as well as learn from your classmates' successes.
  • Recommended time frames for progressing through sleep changes but self-paced so that you can adjust to your schedule
  • Downloadable, fillable worksheets to facilitate learning and important sleep calculations
  • Straightforward, brief instructional videos for more detailed concepts
  • Regular reference to science-based explanations for all sleep adjustments
  • Unlimited access to downloadable, pre-recorded, guided relaxation audio recordings.

Of course, I am biased, but I hope you will join us if this program suits your goals for changing chronic sleep problems.

Alissa S. Yamasaki, Ph.D.

Alissa Yamasaki, Ph.D., is the instructor for this course and is trained in the provision of CBT-I (cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia) and related interventions for sleep. She has been working with adults to reset and restore sleep patterns since 2016, and she especially delights in working with women over 40 and through retirement. She understands that many women are frustrated to see that their sleep problems persist even as life calms down in midlife and retirement; they see that they have a good life with many joys and simply want enough sleep to fuel their otherwise fulfilled life.

Dr. Yamasaki believes that everything is easier when you're getting good sleep, and this is her motivation to help others sleep well. She is a licensed psychologist with over a decade of experience in clinical practice. She owns Ayama Psychotherapy LLC, which is a group practice of psychologists who take a mind-body approach, specializing in helping people with anxiety, stress, insomnia and other health-related concerns.

Her interest in sleep stems from seeing sleep disrupt people's lives and interfere with mental health treatment. She has come to appreciate that there is a gap between the emphasis on the importance of getting good sleep vs. the accessibility to good sleep improvement support, particularly when it comes to insomnia and related sleep problems.

She holds a Ph.D. from Penn State University, has completed training in the treatment of insomnia with Penn Behavioral Sleep Medicine in Philadelphia, PA, as well as with Dr. Julio Mendoza of Penn State Health Sleep Research and Treatment Center in Hershey, PA.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the course start and finish?
The online written material is completely self-paced - you decide when you start and when you finish. Sleep Q&A sessions are offered every other week for the first 3 months from the start date of the course, and periodically after that. At this time, there is no additional fee for continuing in Sleep Q&A session after the first 3 months.
How long do I have access to the course?
After enrolling, you have unlimited access to this course for as long as you like - across any and all devices you own. If you progress through the course at the recommended rate specified in the lectures, you will complete all online learning in 12 weeks; the course lessons are brief, but changes to sleep patterns are made in 2-week increments.
What if I am unhappy with the course?
We want you to be happy. If you run into a technical problem, let us know so that we can fix it. We will provide a full refund if you contact us by email within the first 30 days following enrollment, verify that you followed a strict sleep schedule based upon your sleep data, and verify that you were still not satisfied.
I already talked with my therapist about sleep. I still have sleep problems. Will it be any different?
Our work is probably different. For example, our Mastering Restful Sleep program involves crunching your sleep numbers and giving you a sleep "prescription" of times about when to sleep and wake up, as well as clear direction about what to when you can't sleep. If you didn't learn how to crunch numbers, then you probably didn't get the level of individualization which we offer in Mastering Restful Sleep. Our work is greatly informed by, and follows a format overlapping with, CBT-I (cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia). The main difference between Mastering Restful Sleep and a CBT-I protocol is that the learning through our program will be largely self-guided; you are given the tools to be in charge of your sleep changes, rather a sleep professional tracking your progress.
I'm considering taking Mastering Restful Sleep, but am not sure.
Of course, we are biased and believe that restful sleep is a good investment. We understand that after trying many different ways of fixing sleep, you may be skeptical. Our beginner courses, First Things First and Good Sleep 101, are very good representations of our methods and style of teaching. If you feel comfortable in those and with practicing what we call the "diligent grit" mindset, you are likely to be a good fit for the program. If, after you have taken those beginner courses and still have questions, please feel free to contact us with your specific concerns. We will do our best to help you figure out if it makes sense to try the program.
I need 8 hours of sleep or I am a wreck. Will the Mastering Restful Sleep program require me to have less than that?
Our #1 goal is to have you sleep regularly, restfully and feel restored. One of the top mistakes people make when trying to fix sleep is prioritizing a specific number of hours of sleep instead of figuring out what is needed to feel rested and restored. You should be aware that strategically and temporarily shortening your sleep time according to your own current sleep patterns is one way we use to reset the body at the beginning stages of change. If strategic, temporary sleep loss makes you very uncomfortable, then we recommend that you review the Good Sleep 101 material and consider mindset changes first before trying to change your sleep in the Mastering Restful Sleep program.
What if my sleep problems were triggered by menopause?
The information and strategies offered will apply to sleep problems triggered by a variety of situations, including medically-driven situation, like hormone-related fluctuations and menopause.
Am I eligible for Mastering Restful Sleep if I am taking sleep medications?
Yes. Medications will be discussed in the program with zero pressure to change medications. The aim is for you to confidently sleep so that you can decide if you wish to continue to take sleep medications in the long-run. We do ask folks to consult with their prescribing physician before making any adjustments to prescriptions. Most commonly, people will start to see positive changes in sleep and then talk to their physician about reducing medication reliance.
I have a special _______(insert: bed, sound machine, bedtime music, sleep tea, or any other ritual). Will I be able to use it with your program/courses?
Good sleep does not require lots of bells and whistles. You may use what you usually use for sleep, but our approach does not require (or prohibit) any special accompaniment in order to get good sleep. We will not try to sell you special equipment or promote any special appliances for any of our courses. If you use anything special for sleep, we only ask that you continue to use it every night instead of varying it from night to night, as this can obscure your understanding of what factors are helping you.
I noticed that you hold Q&A sessions. Who can attend these and is it necessary?
It's hard to convey how grateful people are for having a community to connect with regarding sleep. Most people describe themselves as being unsure if they want to attend, but end up being repeat attenders because of the positive experience. The atmosphere is kept casual and supportive. You will hear information from the instructor as well as helpful tips and motivation from others at the Q&A session. There are often nuances for your own sleep needs which generate questions, and the Q&A sessions are helpful when you are actively making a lot of sleep improvements, such as through our Mastering Restful Sleep program. Currently, Q&A sessions are for those enrolled in Mastering Restful Sleep.
Why do you have an application process?
It's important to us to provide a personalized, positive experience in our program, and the application process gives us a chance to make sure that everyone is a good match for the program.
Do you offer financial aid?
We will consider requests on a case-by-case basis, and we are especially open to helping those who make a strong case for their financial need and their commitment to completing the program. "I don't have the money" is not considered a sufficient reason. Please ask by emailing us directly ([email protected]).

A reminder that our courses are not meant as a substitute for medical care. No client/therapist relationship is formed as a result of participation in this course. Please consult your physician if you have pressing needs. Registration to this course indicates that you understand that sleep problems can be a manifestation of other medical problems and that you can consult with a physician if you are not sure if you are an appropriate fit for our courses. You are also indicating that you are aware that your health conditions, if any, will not be monitored by the instructor.

We have outlined our terms and privacy policy. Both can be reviewed at the bottom of this page. By utilizing this site or registering for a course, you are indicating agreement with these policies.
